The Indian Arrival Committee's (IAC) third and final Mela was held on Saturday, May 8 at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground to celebrate the 166th anniversary of the arrival of Indians to Guyana. It was a huge success in spite of the rains, which had caused two venue changes.

More than 8,000 Essequibians joined the IAC for its Essequibo County Mela that saw a rich presentation of Indian culture. Performances by Sitare Dance Troupe, the Tarana International Dance Troupe, the Dharmic Sabha's Reena Dance Group and songs and poetry by young Essequibians punctuated the four-hour show.

Attractions included a variety of Indian dishes, non-alcoholic beverages, and an exhibition of Indian culture.

IAC Executive Member Evan Radhay Persaud noted that it was the first Mela of the IAC on the Essequibo Coast and expressed his appreciation for the grand turnout. He updated Essequibians on the work of the IAC to preserve and promulgate Indian culture and heritage in Guyana. Members of the audience were in full support for the declaration of May 5 as Arrival Day and hailed the IAC's effort in this regard.

Regional Chairman Ali Baksh delivered a message on behalf of the region to Essequibians during which he recalled the efforts to have May 5 declared a National Holiday. He thanked the large crowd for coming out in spite of the inclement weather to be part of this important event.

Bringing a message on behalf of the Government of Guyana was Mr. Robert Persaud, Information Liaison to the President. Persaud, in extending Indian Arrival Day greetings, noted that President Bharrat Jagdeo had delivered on a promise made one year ago to have May 5 declared a National Holiday. He remarked that events such as these provide an opportunity for the celebration of the country's rich diversity in the context of forging national unity. The Government official said that there is no conflict between celebrating one's culture and ethnic identity and being a true, loyal Guyanese. Persaud also paid homage to the immigrants who were brought to Guyana and called on all Guyanese to take inspiration from their courage, resilience and commitment to building Guyana.

On the occasion of the 166th anniversary of the Indian Arrival to Guyana, the IAC held Melas at the National Park on May 2 which attracted more than 15,000 (in spite of the rains and venue change) and on May 5 at the Albion Sports Complex, which attracted more than 20,000 in attendance.
