Better Hope grocery robbed
-owner and wife beaten

Gunmen attacked a Better Hope grocery on Tuesday night, making off with more than $50,000 in cash after they beat the owner and his wife and held up their customers.

Dhanraj Lall is now nursing a broken jaw at the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted after two gunmen beat him in his store, located near the Vryheid's Lust Primary School.

Parvati Manick, his wife, was in the store when the men attacked, sometime before 9 pm on Tuesday night.

The men entered the shop and closed the doors behind them. Lall, who was drinking at the time, made a remark to the men who drew their guns and beat him.

They then held up the three or four men who were drinking inside at the time, relieving then of their cash and jewellery. They then moved on to the grocery section, where Manick was stationed. She said they demanded money and her jewellery, which she handed over.

But the men, still unsatisfied, kicked her and demanded that she hand over the rest. After the woman finally convinced them there was no more they walked out of the store and made their escape. Police were summoned but no arrests were made up to yesterday.

The attack followed one on Monday night in Beterver-wagting, also on the East Coast, in which several shops were pillaged and shots fired.
