

Four seriously injured
in East Coast crash

FOUR people were seriously injured yesterday when the motorcar they were traveling in slammed into a truck at Public Road Fairfield, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara while they were heading to Timehri, East Bank Demerara, for a thanks giving service.

Injured are:
Pastor of the Itacha Elim Pentecostal Church,
Jacob Anthony, 39; his wife,
Allison Anthony, 31, of Itacha Village, West Bank Berbice;
church members Lorna Collins, 45, of Lot 542 Itacha Village, and
Lorraine Saul, 42, also of Itacha Village, West Bank Berbice.
According to reports, the church members were heading to Timehri, East Bank
Demerara in a motorcar owned and driven by Jacob Anthony when, around 13:30
hours or 1.30 p.m., they crashed into the side of a speeding truck at
Fairfield Public Road, Mahaicony.
Jacob said that he was driving at a normal rate of speed when he saw a truck
coming out of a street onto the road at full speed.
The injured man said he applied brakes and tried to swerve from the truck's
path but slammed into the side of the truck in the process.
Anthony told the Guyana Chronicle that he was knocked unconscious and was
rushed to the hospital by people in a passing minibus.
He sustained severe injuries to the head, face and stomach. Blood was pouring
through his nose and mouth and he was crying out for stomach pains.
Anthony's wife, Allison, who was slipping in and out of consciousness,
suffered injuries to her head, face, neck and stomach.
She was covered in blood.
Lorna Collins sustained injuries to her head, eyes and stomach.
The injured woman said they were headed for a church service at the opening of
a building for the new Elim Pentecostal at Timehri, East Bank Demerara when
the accident occurred.
As she sat in the wheel chair with her tattered clothes and grimacing in pain,
she said that they had earlier concluded a service at Itacha Elim Pentecostal
Church, West Bank Berbice, and was heading to the other service.
Lorraine Saul received severe injuries to her nose, face, chest and abdomen.
She was also covered in blood and bleeding from the nose.
Several relatives rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)
after receiving the news and were holding the hands of their loved ones and
praying.
