A carpenter was shot in his right side late Sunday night after being robbed of a gold band while drinking at a rum shop in Best Village, West Coast Demerara (WBD).

Vickram Searwar, 37, of Lot 3 Best Village was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital where the bullet has been removed.

Speaking to Stabroek News, Keith Whyte, who lives at Lot 22 Best Village at the shop where the man was shot, said the incident occurred around 10 pm.

He said he was sitting with friends at the front of the shop having a few beers when he saw two men pull up on a motorbike. He said the pillion rider jumped off and went inside where he asked for a cigarette and asked how much it cost to play pools.

According to Whyte, the men left and after about two minutes returned. The pillion rider went into the shop where Searwar was drinking with a friend and pulled off his band. He then tried to go in his pocket when Searwar resisted. The bandit ran off but Searwar picked up a pool cue and broke it on the concrete fence.

Whyte said the bandit then whipped out a gun and fired two shots, one of which hit Searwar. He then jumped on the bike and rode off. The two are not known to the area. Searwar was taken to the West Demerara hospital and later transferred to Georgetown for an operation to extract the bullet. His wife said when she visited her husband yesterday he could not remember what had happened and wanted to know how he arrived in hospital.

She described her husband as being very determined noting that it was not strange that he had fought for the band. It was a birthday gift from her and he had declared no one could take it away. She said once they were in the city when someone had tried to snatch it but Searwar and another man thwarted that attempt. "It is not strange that he do dah because is so he stay. He does always say if anybody trying to thief from he, he go put up a fight," the wife said.
