Chanderpaul should captain the West Indies in the one day matches

Dear Editor,

I am an English resident and fan but one who also supports the West Indies. First of all, Mr. Michael Holding has to be corrected. In the first test he stated on TV that Ramnaresh Sarwan was selected over Shivnarine Chanderpaul as captain of Guyana with a little controversy. Mr. Holding should get his facts right and apologise since Chanderpaul was not only elected, rightfully, the captain of Guyana over Sarwan but also won the regional one day title and did Guyanese proud. I don't believe he was correctly rewarded, praised and recognised.

The controversy surrounding the captaincy only, and I repeat, only came as a result of the bias of Sean Devers, the journalist/commentator in his favouritism for Sarwan. We all know that after Hooper and also because of the fact that he is a veteran of more than 70 tests and a wonderful and consistent performer, the job was always Chander-paul's own.

As a result of the above and the fact that Sarwan is too young and inexperienced, Chanderpaul should rightfully captain the West Indies team in the one-dayers. I am sure he will embrace the job like he did with Guyana and surely has the support and admiration of the rest of the team and supporters. Long live my true captain and performer, Shiv.

Yours faithfully,

Rick Watts
