As for the letters, we have received more supporting the Phantom squad than opposing it. Not all have been published. It is not our practice to join issue with every letter we disagree with. End

Mr. Ronald Gajraj

Home Affairs Minister

A Minister who it would appear has been very good is declared guilty of a crime which was perpetuated on the Indian population for more than 25 continuous years by the PNC but these same Indians who are so profound in their verdict did not have the balls to stand up and face those thugs.

If the man is guilty of a crime go to the court and petition for a trial. Spend your money and engage legal counsel to proceed but do not use the press and foreign governments to do your dirty work.

Guyana political parties trade blame over escalating crime problem
Monday, March 29, 2004
Guyana’s two major political parties have sought to blame each other for a resurgence of violence in areas east of the capital.

Criminal gangs have been robbing and terrorising residents of the lower east
coast including Beterverwagting (BV), Triumph, Lusignan and Sophia.

The head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, told reporters
that the attacks have coincided with heightened political activities by the
main opposition People's National Congress Reform (PNC/R) in its campaign to
remove embattled Home Affairs Minister Ronald Gajraj from office.

He said violence was “expected" with every PNC/R-led activity.

But PNC/R Chief Whip Lance Carberry blames the ruling People's Progressive
Party Civic (PPP/C) for mishandling the renewed crime spree.

"Regrettably, the Government has again embarked upon a campaign to
politicise the serious crime situation for its own narrow objectives,” he
said.

“Faced with mounting dissent over their failure to set up an inquiry into
the Gajraj affair, they now seek to use the crime situation to generate
racial tension and to find a political scapegoat,” he added.

Carberry said his party has consistently condemned violence in the country
and repeated that "the images of brutality and assault witnessed recently in
and the East Bank must be of grave concern to all Guyanese”.

The opposition parliamentarian urged new Police Commissioner Winston Felix
"to expeditiously establish a plan of action that can be implemented without
delay”.
