THE HUMAN Service and Welfare Department of the People's National Congress/Reform (PNC/R) yesterday began three days of distribution of some $800,000 in uniform vouchers to needy families.

PNC/R Member of Parliament (MP) Ms. Volda Lawrence said yesterday the donations would benefit families in Regions Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), Four (Demerara Mahaica), Five (Mahaica Berbice) and Ten.

The vouchers – $1,500 for primary school students and $2,000 for those at the secondary level – are redeemable at Ravina's Store.

Ms. Lawrence said the beneficiaries would include persons who visited the welfare office for help on a monthly basis and single parent families. Community leaders also selected some of the persons who fit the criteria for receiving help.

Ms. Lawrence explained that the PNC/R’s Welfare Department has been making this donation every year since 1999, except for last year.

She said the service is appealing for contributions from the public to assist those in less fortunate positions. She also said that with adequate financing, the distribution would continue.

Yesterday’s distribution was carried out at the party’s Georgetown District Office on D’Urban Street, Werk-en-Rust, where scores of persons lined up waiting to collect their vouchers.
